Jewellery Care: Simple Habits That Help Your Pieces Last

Jewellery care does not need to be complicated. A few consistent habits can help reduce scratches, residue, tangles and unnecessary wear, especially for the pieces you reach for most often.

Store jewellery with space

One of the easiest ways to protect jewellery is to stop pieces rubbing against each other when they are not being worn. Use a soft pouch, the original packaging or separate compartments in a jewellery box. Close necklace clasps before storing them to reduce tangling.

For rings and polished surfaces, separation is particularly useful because repeated contact with harder pieces can create small marks over time.

Clean gently

For routine cleaning, start with the least aggressive method. A soft, clean cloth is often enough to remove fingerprints and light residue. Where appropriate for the specific piece, a soft damp cloth or cotton bud with a small amount of mild detergent can help with build-up.

Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive powders and rough tools unless the product instructions specifically say they are suitable. More force is not automatically better when cleaning jewellery.

Put jewellery on after beauty products

Perfume, hairspray, body lotion, sunscreen and cosmetics can leave residue on jewellery. A simple routine is to finish applying products first, allow them to settle, then put your jewellery on.

This will not prevent every mark or bit of build-up, but it can reduce unnecessary direct exposure.

Think about heat and chemicals

Very high heat and concentrated chemicals are different from ordinary everyday wear. Saunas, cleaning products and harsh chemical environments can be demanding on jewellery finishes and stones. Remove jewellery when a product-specific care instruction recommends it.

After water or exercise

If a piece is designed for contact with water, it can still benefit from being rinsed or wiped clean after exposure to salt, chlorine, sweat or soap residue, depending on its material and finish. Dry it thoroughly before storing.

For pieces that are not described as water-resistant, follow the individual product instructions and keep them away from unnecessary moisture.

Polish without over-polishing

A clean microfibre or 100% cotton cloth can help restore shine and remove light surface marks. Use gentle pressure. Repeated aggressive polishing can be unsuitable for plated or specially finished surfaces.

Check the product page first

Different materials, stones and finishes can need different care. The product details for your specific piece should always take priority over generic advice. ALUVAYA product pages list the relevant material and finish information for each design.

Make care part of the routine

The easiest care routine is the one you will actually use: wipe pieces when needed, store them properly and check them occasionally for residue or tangling. Small habits are usually more useful than an occasional intensive clean.
